Miami Blues is the kind of film you'll probably enjoy more if you haven't read Charles Willeford's influential and hugely entertaining pulp thriller (Miami Blues (Penguin Modern Classics)), but even if you haven't you might still wonder why an idea this good doesn't work better. The movie wants to be an off-center comedy, a lopsided cops-and-robbers movie where everybody has a few screws loose.
