Home to one of the world's few truly wild horse populations, the 44km-long spit of sand that makes up Sable Island lies some 300km southeast of Halifax. This crescent-shaped island is often referred to as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” as hundreds of ships have met their end on its shifting sands. For sailors, it was the graveyard of the Atlantic, an island hidden by waves, storms and fog that meant only death and destruction.
