It’s a rare thing to see a movie about failure that a) is plays like a gentle rom com, and b) is not about utter neurosis. Discovering to be kindred spirits, each helps the other find healing, in addition to the confidence to face the 'failures' in their lives.

To be fair, I gave it 30 minutes. Standing Up, Falling Down, with its two lead talents and a terrific supporting cast around them, is very funny without ever trying too hard to be. A compassionate and affecting study of loss, ageing, regrets and friendship, Standing Up, Falling Down is also a far more organic and funnier comedy than its snappily edited, gag-heavy trailer makes it appear.
