Outside of a presentation I gave for Pop-Up Magazine #5 in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, no one has ever seen these sketches before.

Susan Kare designed all of her early icons on graph paper, with one square representing each pixel. But it is not just her fonts and contributions to Typography that make Susan Kare a design icon.

That same year, Kare’s preliminary icon sketches for the Macintosh were added to the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection in New York City. As well as prints of her icons old and new, Kare also sells a book documenting her career. The gestures and metaphors of icon-driven computing feel so natural and effortless to us now, it seems strange to recall navigating in the digital world any other way. Susan Kare remains active as a graphic designer and the show also includes a number of graphic works, such as the political posters of Emory Douglas of the Black Panthers, Corita Kent, and Shepard Fairey, the psychedelic posters of Victor Moscoso and Rick Griffin, the magazine design of David Carson, and a collection of works by Facebook’s Analog Research Lab.
