You could reach the site from nearby Coniston or Hawkshead on our Hawkshead to Tarn Hows Walk. It was formed by the building of a damn in the first half of the nineteenth century that led to the transformation of three small tarns into the larger single tarn that exists today. One of our favourite walks from the Old Farmhouse is to Tarn Hows, just one and a half miles north-west of Hawkshead, and at this time of year, with the trees showing their finest autumn foliage, it is a truly spectacular place. You could pick this up to continue your walk towards Colwith Force Waterfall and Elterwater (north).
