The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock is the debut novel from brilliant new literary talent Imogen Hermes Gowar, exploring the ways in which those disadvantaged by race, gender, and class in 18th century London attempted to build better lives for themselves. Mostly, though, the cast of endlessly engaging characters will keep you turning the pages until you get to the wholly satisfying But it also slyly scrutinizes class, gender, and race dividesâadding a layer of depth to a novel that is hopefully the first of many for Ms. Gowar. Alternating worlds The author tells the story in alternating points-of-view between two worlds: one of the merchant Mr. Hancock and the other of the courtesan Angelica Neal. Thankfully there is no answer or solution to that topic, hence why we keep getting new and brilliant novels. When a mermaid falls unexpectedly into Jonah Hancockâs hands, he decides to parade it about the country in exchange for fame and fortune.
