Mostly, though, the cast of endlessly engaging characters will keep you turning the pages until you get to the wholly satisfying But it also slyly scrutinizes class, gender, and race divides—adding a layer of depth to a novel that is hopefully the first of many for Ms. Gowar. Alternating worlds The author tells the story in alternating points-of-view between two worlds: one of the merchant Mr. Hancock and the other of the courtesan Angelica Neal.
